Vegas Valley Water Guide

Las Vegas water hardness by ZIP code, utility by utility

Valley tap water comes from a handful of water systems. Find yours by ZIP and you have its published hardness and a softener setting.

Find your ZIP code

Start typing your ZIP and the list shrinks to match. For each ZIP you get every water system that supplies part of it, how much of the ZIP’s area each one covers, the hardness that system publishes and the softener setting that goes with it.

87 ZIP codes in the Las Vegas-area table.

A blank hardness cell means one of two things: the system doesn’t publish a hardness figure, or it isn’t in our data yet. Either way, a test kit settles it. Our Las Vegas water softener settings page explains how to turn a test result into a dial number.

Which water system serves my Las Vegas ZIP?

Most of the valley, including Las Vegas itself, Summerlin and the unincorporated county, gets water from the Las Vegas Valley Water District. The other large suppliers are cities with their own utilities: Henderson, North Las Vegas and Boulder City. Farther out, Laughlin, Mesquite and Bunkerville, Mount Charleston, Blue Diamond, Jean and Searchlight each run on a separate small system, most of them on wells. Three of these towns have a page on their own safety results: is Boulder City tap water safe to drink, is Laughlin tap water safe to drink and is Mesquite, Nevada tap water safe to drink.

Water doesn’t respect ZIP lines. Along the Henderson and North Las Vegas borders, one ZIP can be split between two suppliers, which is why some rows list more than one.

Is Las Vegas water hard everywhere?

Yes, almost everywhere. The Las Vegas Valley Water District publishes 280 parts per million (16 grains per gallon) for its whole service area, and the City of Henderson 304 parts per million. Lake Mead supplies most of the valley, so the big systems sit close together. The well-fed outlying systems differ more: some are harder still, and Searchlight’s main wells are much softer. Our Las Vegas water hardness page compares every system side by side.

North Las Vegas is the gap. The city calls its water hard in its annual report but gives no number, so North Las Vegas rows show no figure. The North Las Vegas softener page explains what to do instead.

What the dial setting means

This is the number to key into your softener's control head (the box on top of the tank) where it asks for water hardness, often shown as "Hardness" or "gpg". It is how the softener knows how much hardness it is taking out of each gallon.

When the resin inside is full of minerals, the softener recharges: it washes the resin with brine from the salt tank and sends the minerals down the drain. For your household that works out to about every 8 days, and it happens automatically.

Too low a number lets hard water through between recharges. Too high a number makes it recharge sooner than it needs to, using extra salt and water.

16 grains per gallon is very hard water. Enter 16 on the softener's hardness setting, or choose the system your ZIP row named.

The water district publishes one figure for the whole valley; your street can differ a little. Source: Las Vegas Valley Water District, water quality summary, 2026 (2025 data).

We don't make, sell or install water softeners or filters. Every hardness figure comes from the water utility's own published report, not from us or a seller.

How this figure was measured

Who published it

About the authority
The public water district that serves most of the Las Vegas Valley. This figure is the utility's own. We don't produce or adjust it.
Type of source
Water quality summary: a table of measured minerals that the utility publishes alongside its annual water quality report, which every U.S. community water system must publish under the Safe Drinking Water Act.
Data year
2026 (2025 data)
Last checked
15 October 2026, against the original document

What the figure is

What was measured
Total hardness, in parts per million and grains per gallon: 280 mg/L, published as 16 grains per gallon
Area covered
Most of the Las Vegas Valley (one figure for the whole service area)
How it was sampled
One figure for the whole service area, listed with the other minerals the district measured: calcium 75, magnesium 24, sodium 89 and total dissolved solids 591, all in parts per million.
Where the water comes from
About 90 percent from Lake Mead, fed by Colorado River snowmelt; the other 10 percent from wells that tap the deep Las Vegas Valley groundwater aquifer.

How we use it

Figure we use
The document’s own grains-per-gallon figure (16).
Unit conversion
1 grain per gallon = 17.1 milligrams per litre (mg/L), the same as parts per million (ppm)
How we calculate
Daily hardness to remove = people × 75 gallons × grains per gallon. We pick the smallest standard size that lasts about 7 days between recharges, at 3,300 grains removed per pound of salt.
Limits
The district's own questions-and-answers page gives a slightly different figure (291 parts per million, 17 grains per gallon); we use the newer summary. A home test result is more exact and overrides this figure.

Las Vegas water hardness map: where the lookup comes from

We didn’t draw our own map. The lookup combines three public sources:

  • Water system areas: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s map data of community water system service areas, version 3, released in March 2026. For the large valley utilities the outlines come from the systems; for most small rural systems EPA estimated them.
  • ZIP code areas: the U.S. Census Bureau’s ZIP Code Tabulation Areas from its 2025 TIGER/Line files.
  • Hardness: each system’s own published figure, as listed on our water data sources page. Nothing is adjusted.

A system counts for a ZIP when it covers at least 2% of the ZIP’s area, or when most of a small system sits inside that ZIP. The second rule keeps places like Jean and Blue Diamond in the table, since each is a small dot inside a very large desert ZIP.

When the ZIP answer isn’t enough

  • Census ZIP areas are close to, not the same as, postal ZIP codes, and brand-new ZIPs may be missing.
  • EPA’s estimated outlines for small systems can be rough at the edges.
  • Mesquite’s water district covers Bunkerville too, but EPA’s estimated outline doesn’t reach the Bunkerville ZIP, so that row shows no system. The Mesquite softener page has the district’s figure.
  • On a private well there is no utility figure at all: test the water yourself.

Questions we get asked

How do I know if my water is hard or soft by ZIP code?
Type the ZIP into the lookup on this page. It names the water system and gives that system's own published hardness. Nearly everywhere in the valley the answer is very hard water, above 10.5 grains per gallon on the U.S. Geological Survey scale.
Is there a Las Vegas water hardness map?
No water agency publishes one map of hardness for the whole valley. The ZIP table here stands in for one: it joins the Environmental Protection Agency's map of water system areas to each system's own hardness figure.
Is Henderson water harder than Las Vegas water?
Slightly, on the published figures: the City of Henderson gives 304 parts per million and the Las Vegas Valley Water District 280. That works out to a softener setting of 16 for the district and 18 for Henderson, which publishes its own grains-per-gallon figure.
My ZIP shows two water systems. Which one is mine?
The one named on your water bill. ZIP codes cross utility lines, mostly where Las Vegas meets Henderson or North Las Vegas.
