Mesquite and Bunkerville water hardness
Mesquite and Bunkerville are supplied by the Virgin Valley Water District from nine deep wells. Hardness varies from well to well, so the district gives a range.

What the dial setting means
This is the number to key into your softener's control head (the box on top of the tank) where it asks for water hardness, often shown as "Hardness" or "gpg". It is how the softener knows how much hardness it is taking out of each gallon.
When the resin inside is full of minerals, the softener recharges: it washes the resin with brine from the salt tank and sends the minerals down the drain. For your household that works out to about every 8 days, and it happens automatically.
Too low a number lets hard water through between recharges. Too high a number makes it recharge sooner than it needs to, using extra salt and water.
Mesquite's water comes from several wells, so hardness varies; we use the middle of the range. Source: Virgin Valley Water District, annual water quality report, 2025 (2025 data).

Nine wells, one range
The district’s report gives a range across its wells rather than one average: 180 to 270 mg/L of hardness, which it also lists as 10 to 16 grains per gallon. Other minerals vary too: sodium 39 to 150 mg/L and total dissolved solids 340 to 680 mg/L.

Not Las Vegas water
Mesquite’s water doesn’t come from Lake Mead, and the Virgin Valley Water District is separate from the Las Vegas Valley Water District. Use this page’s figures, not the valley’s 16, when you size or set a softener.
