What a water softener costs in a Las Vegas home
Few companies in the valley put a softener price in writing. These are the ones that do, with what each figure covers, and the yearly cost of running one on 16 gpg water.
How much does a water softener cost in Las Vegas, installed?
Between about $800 and $4,200 for a whole-home softener, going by the two valley plumbing companies that publish a price. Active Plumbing gives $800 to $2,500 and Kingdom Plumbing $1,800 to $4,200. Neither is a quote: both say the final figure comes after they look at the home.
What each range covers, in the companies’ own terms:
- Active Plumbing, $800 to $2,500: a whole-home ion-exchange softener sized to the household, the tie-in to the main line with a bypass valve, the brine tank, a drain line with an air gap, programming the recharge and a hardness check afterwards. The company says the range depends on the unit’s capacity, whether the home already has a softener loop and how much pipe has to be rerouted.
- Kingdom Plumbing, $1,800 to $4,200: a whole-home softener system. The page says every job starts with a hardness test and a flat-rate quote, and that licensed technicians handle the connections, placement and setup. It doesn’t list the parts.
Every installed price we hold is in this list, with who published it, what kind of source it is and when we read it:

For a sense of where the valley sits, a national home-improvement guide puts the cost of installing a softener anywhere from $200 to $6,000, with $1,500 as its national average. Before you compare quotes, work out the size your home needs: on valley water, our sizer gives 24,000 grains for one or two people, 32,000 for three, 40,000 for four, 48,000 for five and 64,000 for six.
Softener prices by grain size, before anyone fits it
Bought on its own, a softener’s price climbs with its capacity (the grains of hardness it can hold between recharges). The list below shows every store model we hold a dated price for, grouped by size. The prices are for the softener alone:

- $489 Rheem Preferred RHS32 (Home Depot)

The softener alone, as each seller listed it (Oct 2026); installation is extra. Dealer brands (Culligan, Kinetico, EcoWater and others) give prices on request.
The dealer brands we hold give no purchase price. Culligan’s Las Vegas page, for example, says the price depends on the system and its features, and that buyers can rent, buy or finance after a free in-home consultation. If you buy from a store, budget separately for fitting it, as in the next section, or read our guide to Las Vegas water softener installation if you plan to do it yourself on an existing loop.
Labor, and what a softener loop does to the price
A valley plumbing company’s guide to softeners gives $150 to $1,500 for the labor on a typical whole-house installation, depending on how complex the job is, the size of the home and where it is. The national guide mentioned above gives $150 to $1,000 for labor alone.
The loop is the biggest single swing. Active Plumbing says a home with an unused softener loop in the garage is straightforward to connect and keeps the price toward the low end, while a home without one needs the supply rerouted, which it names as a main reason prices vary. Our page on the water softener loop in Las Vegas shows how to tell whether your garage has one.
One cost-estimate website models a 32,000-grain softener installed by an independent installer in Nevada at $1,024 to $1,291, from makers’ prices and federal wage data. It says the figure has not been checked against local quotes, so treat it as a rough cross-check only.
Dual-tank and salt-free systems in the valley
A Las Vegas plumbing company’s guide gives $1,000 to $5,000 as the typical cost of a dual-tank softener, which keeps one tank in service while the other recharges. It doesn’t say whether installation is included. We hold no price for the dealer brands’ twin-tank models.
For salt-free conditioning, Active Plumbing gives the same $800 to $2,500 installed range as for a softener, and Culligan’s Las Vegas page shows its salt-free conditioner from $46 a month. Before you pay for one, read what the Southern Nevada Water Authority says: a salt-free system conditions the water but does not soften it. Our guide to salt-free water softeners in Las Vegas covers what that means for scale.
Monthly prices for renting a softener in Las Vegas
From about $38 to $46 a month, on the two valley prices we found:
- Rain Water Conditioning of Las Vegas advertises softener rentals from $39.95 a month, and says the rental includes professional installation.
- Culligan’s Las Vegas page shows a softener from $38 a month and a salt-free conditioner from $46. The page says Culligan offers rent, purchase or finance, and doesn’t say which of those the monthly figure is.

Salt and recharge water on 16 gpg valley water
Roughly $75 to $160 a year for a family of four, most of it salt. Our sizer puts that household at about 14 bags of 40 lb a year on valley water. A valley plumbing company’s guide gives $5 to $10 a bag (it doesn’t say what size), so salt comes to about $70 to $140. Here is the salt for every household size:
| People at home | Softener size | Salt a month | Salt a year | 40 lb bags a year | Potassium chloride a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 24,000-grain | about 11 lb | about 130 lb | 4 | about 170 lb (5 bags) |
| 2 | 24,000-grain | about 22 lb | about 270 lb | 7 | about 330 lb (9 bags) |
| 3 | 32,000-grain | about 33 lb | about 400 lb | 10 | about 500 lb (13 bags) |
| 4 | 40,000-grain | about 44 lb | about 530 lb | 14 | about 660 lb (17 bags) |
| 5 | 48,000-grain | about 55 lb | about 660 lb | 17 | about 830 lb (21 bags) |
| 6 | 64,000-grain | about 66 lb | about 800 lb | 20 | about 1,000 lb (25 bags) |
At about 16 grains per gallon (Las Vegas Valley; Las Vegas Valley Water District, water quality summary, 2026 (2025 data)). Salt a year = people × 75 gallons a day × 16 grains per gallon × 365 ÷ 3,300 grains per pound. Worked at 3,300 grains per pound, as in our calculator. That is a touch below the 3,350 grains per pound an NSF/ANSI 44 efficiency-rated softener must reach in testing (NSF International), so real use may be slightly lower on an efficient demand-initiated softener and higher on an older timer model. Potassium chloride figures are the salt figures times 1.25, from the theoretical maximums a trade magazine, Water Conditioning & Purification, gives: 6,000 grains per pound for salt against 4,800 for potassium chloride (Jerry Poe, 2001).
The recharge water adds a little to the bill. The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension puts one regeneration at approximately 50 gallons. A four-person softener recharging about every 8 days does it about 46 times a year, so about 2,300 gallons. At the water district’s single-family rates ($1.61 per 1,000 gallons in the first band, $6.33 above 20,000) plus the Southern Nevada Water Authority’s commodity charge of $0.67 per 1,000, that’s about $5 to $16 a year, depending on your band (our calculation).

Can I write off a water softener on my taxes?
Not as a yearly deduction for your own home, in the IRS guidance we read. The IRS guide to selling a home (Publication 523, 2025) lists a soft water system and a filtration system among its examples of improvements, and says the cost of improvements is added to your home’s basis. That counts later, when you work out the gain on a sale, so keep the receipt and the installer’s invoice. For your own situation, ask a tax professional.
Is a water softener a rental property expense?
For a home you rent out, the IRS treats a new softener as an improvement rather than a one-off expense. Its guide for landlords (Publication 527, for 2025 returns) lists a soft water system under plumbing in its examples of improvements, says improvement costs must be capitalized, and says they can generally be depreciated as if the improvement were separate property. Repairs and maintenance are different: the same guide says they may generally be deducted if you aren’t required to capitalize them. Keep the costs of repairs and improvements separate, as the IRS asks, and check the details with a tax professional.

Questions we get asked
- Is a Las Vegas softener price a quote?
- No. Both companies that publish installed ranges call them typical figures and give a written or flat-rate price only after checking the home and the water.
- Does a water test cost extra?
- It depends on who does it. One valley plumbing company advertises a $99 water quality analysis; two dealers and another plumbing company offer a free one. Your water district's published hardness is free.
- Do I need a permit to install a softener in unincorporated Clark County?
- Clark County lists a water softener as one of its simple online plumbing permits, one item per permit. Cities inside the valley run their own building departments.
