How many there are matters less than which kind suits your job. A brand dealer sells one maker’s equipment, a water treatment company sells its own or several makers’ systems, and a plumber fits what you or they choose. The next sections explain the difference, then show who names your area. If you are still deciding what to buy, start with our checklist for the best water softener for Las Vegas.

Softener salt delivery in the valley, and where to buy a bag

Two companies in our list advertise salt delivery: Rain Water Conditioning of Las Vegas and Serv-All Water Conditioning, both local water treatment companies. Neither page we read gives a delivery price or the areas covered, so ask when you call.

If you would rather carry it yourself, a Las Vegas plumbing company’s guide says bags of softener salt typically cost $5 to $10 and are sold at hardware stores. On valley water a family of four goes through about 14 bags of 40 lb a year, by our sizer. Which bag to choose, and whether potassium chloride is worth the extra, is covered in buying softener salt in Las Vegas.

Brand dealer, water treatment company or plumber?

Each kind of business answers a different need. In short:

  • Brand dealers sell, install and service one maker’s line. In our list that means Culligan, EcoWater and two dealers of Puronics (Aggua Systems and Aquamax). Their pages offer a free home water test or a free consultation and give prices on request; Culligan’s says buyers can rent, buy or finance.
  • Local water treatment companies handle softeners, conditioners and reverse osmosis as their main work. Rain Water Conditioning of Las Vegas says it has made and installed its own systems in Las Vegas since 1995. Serv-All Water Conditioning, based in North Las Vegas, lists Vortech, Clack and Fleck softeners. Both rent softeners as well as selling them.
  • Plumbing companies install softeners as one service among many and can deal with the pipework around it, such as a missing loop. Active Plumbing says it can set up control valves an owner has already chosen, such as Fleck or Clack. Two of the plumbers publish installed price ranges; see what a water softener costs in Las Vegas.

Whichever kind you call, the work is the same: the softener goes on the main supply with a bypass valve, a brine tank and a drain line. Our guide to Las Vegas water softener installation walks through each step, which helps when you compare what two companies propose.

Which installers name your part of the valley

This table lists, for each area, the companies whose pages name it. Companies that say they cover the whole valley are counted alongside, since they don’t list every neighborhood.

An area missing from a company’s page doesn’t mean it won’t come; ask. Outlying towns have fewer names. If you live in Henderson or North Las Vegas, the area page gives the hardness figure to quote to an installer.

Who services and repairs softeners in Las Vegas

Most of the companies in our list say they service softeners, not only install them. Among those that name repair on the pages we read:

  • Serv-All Water Conditioning says it repairs most major brands.
  • Rain Water Conditioning of Las Vegas lists softener repairs and service.
  • Kingdom Plumbing lists salt and filter changes, settings adjustments, tune-ups and repairs of existing systems.
  • Canyon Plumbing, Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Las Vegas and Pure Plumbing & Air list softener repair, and Culligan of Las Vegas lists repairs and service for its systems.

Before you book, try the checks in our guide to water softener repair and service in Las Vegas: many problems come down to the salt, the setting or the bypass valve. If the unit is old, ask for a repair price and a replacement price side by side.

Reverse osmosis and whole-house filter installers in Las Vegas

Six companies in our list say they install reverse osmosis, a filter system that pushes water through a fine membrane, usually at the kitchen sink. Rain Water Conditioning, Serv-All Water Conditioning, Culligan, EcoWater, Aquamax and Kingdom Plumbing name it on the pages we read, and Serv-All lists 4- and 5-stage systems. For whole-house filtration, Active Plumbing, Culligan, Kingdom Plumbing and Pure Plumbing & Air list it, and Pipe Pros Plumbing & Mechanical lists water filter installation.

Kingdom Plumbing gives $250 to $8,000 for a filtration or reverse osmosis system, depending on the system. A filter is not a softener: it doesn’t remove the hardness that causes scale. Our page on Las Vegas water filtration options explains which does what on valley water, and reverse osmosis in Las Vegas covers the drinking-water side.

Looking up a Nevada contractor license

Use the Nevada State Contractors Board’s contractor license search. You can search by license number, company name, or the name of an owner or qualified individual, and the Board says the search shows whether a contractor is licensed and in good standing. A few letters of the name are enough: the search accepts part of a name and wildcards.

Several companies print a license number on their pages, which makes the lookup quicker, but check it yourself: a number on a website is the company’s own statement. Two more reasons to check, from the Board:

  • It is unlawful to act as a contractor in Nevada, or to submit a bid on a job in the state, without an active license.
  • Owners living in a single-family home who hire a licensed residential contractor may be able to claim from the state’s Residential Recovery Fund if the work goes wrong and other routes are exhausted. Homeowners who hired an unlicensed contractor can’t.

The Board’s main website also takes complaints. For a technician’s training, the Water Quality Association, the water treatment trade body, keeps a directory of the professionals it certifies. In unincorporated Clark County, a softener install is one of the county’s simple online plumbing permits; ask whether your installer will pull it.

What to get in writing before a softener goes in

A written quote lets you compare two companies on the same terms. Ask for these on paper:

  1. The size in grains, and the household it was sized for. On valley water our sizer gives 40,000 grains for a family of four (work out yours).
  2. The hardness figure used. The Las Vegas Valley Water District’s summary gives 16 grains per gallon; a company’s own test may differ, so ask which number the size is based on.
  3. The make and model, and whether it is certified. NSF/ANSI 44 is the U.S. standard an independent lab tests home softeners against; you can look a model up in NSF’s softener listings or the Water Quality Association’s certified products.
  4. The installation work: connection to the loop or rerouting of the supply, the bypass valve, the drain line and its air gap, the brine tank, removing an old unit, the permit if one is needed, and setting the hardness on the control.
  5. The warranty, part by part: tank, resin, control valve and electronics, and whether labor is covered.
  6. The full price, or for a rental the monthly charge, how long the contract runs and what ending it costs.
  7. The license number, so you can look it up as above.

Questions we get asked

Does a softener installer in Nevada need a license?
The Nevada State Contractors Board says it is unlawful to act as a contractor in Nevada, or bid on a job in the state, without an active license. Its search shows whether a company holds one.
Can I get a free water test from a Las Vegas softener company?
Several offer one: brand dealers advertise a free home water test or a free consultation, and one plumbing company charges $99 for a water analysis. The water district's own figure, 16 grains per gallon, costs nothing.
Do I need the company that sold my softener to service it?
Not always. One North Las Vegas water treatment company says it repairs most major brands, and several plumbing companies list softener repair. Dealer brands may have parts or warranty terms of their own, so check your warranty first.
