Buying water softener salt in Las Vegas
At 16 grains per gallon, a Las Vegas softener works hard, and the salt tank empties faster than in softer cities. Here's what to buy and how much to expect.

Reading the bag
Softener salt is sold by kind, and the kind is printed on the bag:
- Pellets (often “evaporated” or “high purity”): pressed salt that dissolves evenly. The safe default for most brine tanks.
- Crystals (often “solar”): coarse natural crystals. Some two-tank or older systems ask for them.
- Potassium chloride: an alternative to sodium chloride, for households cutting sodium.
- Rust or iron formulas: salt with additives for iron in well water. Valley city water rarely needs them.
Whichever you choose, follow your softener’s manual if it names one.
How much to buy at once
The cards above show bags a year for each household. Divided by twelve, that’s your monthly need. You can buy two or three months at a time; store it dry, off the garage floor.
Keeping the brine tank healthy
- Fill level: keep the salt above the water line, at least a third of the way up the tank.
- Crusts: a hard bridge across the tank stops brine forming. Break it gently.
- Sludge: a mushy layer at the bottom means impure salt or a long time between cleanings. Scoop it out and rinse the tank once a year.
Salt and sodium
Each recharge leaves a little extra sodium in the softened water. If you’re watching sodium, potassium chloride or a reverse osmosis tap for drinking water are the usual answers.
Questions we get asked
- How often do I add salt to a water softener in Las Vegas?
- For most households, about once a month. A family of four in the valley uses a 40 lb bag roughly every three to four weeks.
- Is potassium better than salt for a softener?
- It adds potassium instead of sodium to the water, which some people prefer. It costs more per bag and more is needed for the same softening.
- Why is the salt in my tank not going down?
- Most often a salt bridge: a crust above the water that the softener can't dissolve. Press down with a broom handle to check.
