Vegas Valley Water Guide

Finding the best water softener for Las Vegas water

Las Vegas homeowners are offered many brands and packages. Rather than rank brands, here's how to judge any system against valley water and your household.

Five things that decide it

1. Size. At 16 grains per gallon, a family of four needs about 40,000 grains of capacity. Too small and it recharges every few days; too large and you’ve paid for capacity you don’t use.

2. How it decides to recharge. A metered (demand) valve recharges when it has softened enough water; a timer recharges on set days. Metered valves usually waste less salt.

3. Independent certification. Look for the specific model listed as certified to NSF/ANSI 44, the standard for household softeners, by an accredited certifier.

4. Warranty you can use. Separate coverage for tank, resin and control valve, the length of each, and who in the valley honors it.

5. Parts and service. A widely used control valve can be serviced by many technicians. A proprietary one may tie you to a single dealer.

Questions for any Las Vegas softener company

  • What size is this unit in grains, and how did you work it out?
  • Is the valve metered or timer-based?
  • Which certification does this exact model hold?
  • What does the warranty cover, for how long, and who handles a claim?
  • What will it cost me each year to run (salt, filters, service)?

Sales tactics to slow down for

Free water tests that end in a same-day offer, prices that only apply today, or packages bundling systems you didn’t ask for. Take the written quote away and compare it.

Brands you’ll hear about

Culligan, Kinetico, EcoWater, RainSoft and Fleck-valve systems are among those Las Vegas homeowners ask about. We don’t sell any of them and no company pays to be named here.

Questions we get asked

What is the best water softener for Las Vegas?
There isn't one model that suits every home. Choose the right size for your household at valley hardness, then compare metered valve, certification, warranty and local service.
Are Kinetico or Culligan good in Las Vegas?
Both are widely sold in the valley. Compare the exact models they quote on capacity, salt use, certification and warranty, the same as any other brand.
Should I buy a softener and reverse osmosis together?
Only if you want both soft water and low-mineral drinking water. They are separate systems; buy each for its own reason.
