Outdoor water softener in Las Vegas, against the makers' heat limits
Putting a softener on the side of the house frees up garage space, but Las Vegas summers sit right at the edge of what the manuals allow. Here's how the numbers compare.
Can you put a water softener outside in Las Vegas?
Can a water softener be installed outside? The makers’ manuals say yes, with conditions, and those conditions are tough to meet in the valley. Whirlpool’s owner FAQ says its softeners can go outdoors but should have a cover for a longer life. Pentair says a covered, open-air spot such as a carport is fine, but the unit can’t be exposed to direct sun or rain. WaterBoss says an outside unit should be enclosed.
What none of them allow is an unshaded softener on a bare pad in full Las Vegas sun.
The makers’ temperature limits against Las Vegas weather
Each manual sets a working range. The table puts them beside the National Weather Service’s figures for Las Vegas (1991–2020 normals).
| Maker and document | Upper limit | Lower limit |
|---|---|---|
| Pentair whole-house softener (2020) | 100°F | 40°F |
| Clack WS1 control valve (2025) | 110°F | 40°F |
| Pentair Fleck 5600SXT valve (2018) | 110°F water | no freezing |
| Morton softener (2024) | 120°F water and air | 40°F |
| GE softener (2023), WaterBoss (2020) | 120°F water | 40°F |
On the weather side: the normal July high in Las Vegas is 104.5°F, the record is 120°F on July 7, 2024, and a normal year has about 78 days at 100°F or more. That puts a typical July afternoon above Pentair’s limit and close to Clack’s, before the sun adds its own heat to the tank.
Winter is the other end. The valley normally gets about 9.8 nights a year at or below 32°F, most of them in December and January, and the all-time low is 8°F in 1963. Morton and Whirlpool say not to put a softener where freezing temperatures occur, Pentair says outdoor installs are only for climates that don’t freeze, and WaterBoss says to protect the drain line from freezing too.
Sun, wind and dust
Heat isn’t the only problem outside. Morton and GE both say strong sun can warp or damage a softener’s non-metal parts, and Pentair adds that sunlight can damage the fiberglass tank. Systems with electronics, Pentair says, can’t sit outside uncovered at all.
The weather service also notes that summer monsoon storms, usually in July and August, bring gusty winds, and that strong winds here carry blowing dust and sand. A softener with an open salt lid or an exposed control head collects grit. One more practical point from Whirlpool: don’t put an outdoor unit under the roofline where rain runs off.
Covers, enclosures and outdoor sheds
Most of the water softener cover ideas that work here do three things: block the sun, shed rain and dust, and leave room to lift the salt lid and reach the control. Options include:
- The maker’s own weather cover. Pentair sells one for its whole-house unit, and Clack requires its cover on an uncovered outdoor install for the valve warranty to hold.
- An outdoor water softener enclosure, shed or cabinet with a lid you can open, vents so heat doesn’t build up inside, and a gap for pipes and the drain line.
- An insulated water softener cover for the few freezing nights, with the drain line protected as well.
A cover also answers the question of how to hide a water softener outside. A plain box painted to match the wall looks like a utility cabinet. Check that whatever you build doesn’t trap the unit against a sunny wall.
A water softener in the garage instead
If you have the choice, the garage is the easier home for a softener in Las Vegas. It keeps off the sun, rain and dust, and it may already have the main line, the water heater and a drain. It still isn’t air-conditioned, so keep the unit away from the sunniest wall and an open door. If your garage has a pre-plumbed hookup, see our guide to the water softener loop in Las Vegas. For heat-related wear on hoses and seals, see water softener leaking in Las Vegas.
Size matters the same indoors or out. Work out your size before you buy, so the cover or cabinet fits the tank you end up with.
Bypassing the softener for outside faucets
Outside taps don’t need softened water. Morton’s manual says outside faucets should stay on hard water so you don’t waste softened water and salt. Pentair says it’s best to plumb the outside faucets ahead of the softener; where that isn’t possible, use the bypass valve whenever you water outside for long, and with a garage or outdoor install a faucet can be added on the inlet side for untreated water. WaterBoss also says to use bypass when watering plants or lawns.
The Southern Nevada Water Authority lists harm to houseplants from the higher salt content among the drawbacks of softening, so keep softened water off your plants.
Choosing a unit for outside
The best outdoor water softener is the one whose own manual allows your spot. Before you buy, read the installation section for its temperature range, what it says about sun and outdoor use, and whether an outdoor install changes the warranty. Our best water softener for Las Vegas guide covers the other checks, and the Las Vegas water softener installation guide covers the hookup.

Questions we get asked
- Can I store water softener salt in the garage?
- Yes, as long as the bags stay dry and off a damp floor. Morton advises keeping the salt level lower and topping up more often in humid places to avoid salt bridging.
- Is softened water OK to use on plants?
- Not for regular watering. The Southern Nevada Water Authority lists harm to houseplants from the higher salt content as a drawback of softening. Use the bypass, or a hose bib on hard water, for plants.
- What is the typical cost to install a water softener?
- No utility or agency in Southern Nevada publishes one. Published estimates from elsewhere cover the softener itself: about $400 to $2,700 from North Dakota State University Extension, $500 to $1,500 for the hardware alone from Penn State Extension, and $400 to $1,200 from Tucson Water. They are estimates, not quotes. An outdoor install may also need a cover or an enclosure, so get written quotes that list every part.
- Does an outdoor softener need a cover in Las Vegas?
- In practice, yes. Pentair, Morton and GE warn against direct sun, Pentair's Fleck valve manual is for dry locations only, and Clack says its valve warranty needs its weather cover on an uncovered outdoor install.
